We are seeking a strategic and experienced Director of Internal Audit to lead our Internal Audit Service.

Reporting to the Chief Governance and Risk Officer, you will provide independent assurance on the effectiveness of governance, risk management, and internal controls across all University operations, including teaching, research, and operational functions. You will oversee a mix of in-house and co-sourced audit activity, ensuring high-quality delivery and actionable insights for senior leadership.

In this role, you will:

  • Provide independent assurance to the Audit and Risk Committee and Council on governance, risk management, and internal control
  • Lead the development and delivery of a risk-based Internal Audit strategy aligned with institutional priorities
  • Oversee audit delivery, particularly complex or high-risk audits, ensuring professional standards and actionable recommendations
  • Lead and develop the Internal Audit team and manage co-sourced audit provision
  • Provide independent advice and promote good practice in risk awareness and internal controls across the University


To be successful, you will demonstrate:

  • Proven senior internal audit experience in large scale, complex, multi-faced organisations, with undertaking strategic complex audits
  • Experience of managing audits and produce reporting with strong analysis and synthesis of findings
  • Experience of developing internal audit processes to meet professional standards and improve the service provided
  • Experience of effectively working with and influencing staff at all levels including senior management.
  • Professional qualification from the Chartered Institute of Internal Auditors or one of the accountancy bodies (or equivalent).
  • Effective communication, stakeholder management, and leadership skills.
