Institute for Statistics and Mathematics

- You will carry out research work in the field of mathematics for economics and business in the operations research and optimization area of the institute, typically with a focus on applications in business and economics, such as network design, logistics and transportation, telecommunications, healthcare, counterfactual explanations, explainability and interpretability of ML/optimization models.
- The research project will comprise high-level methodological contributions involving all aspects of applied mathematics, from model development and mathematical analysis to numerical implementation and statistical estimation of models and they should lead to a PhD thesis compliant with the academic standards of WU.
- You will have teaching and supervision duties at the undergraduate level (2hrs of weekly teaching hours per semester).
- You will be investigating your research topic and spending a third of your working hours on writing your dissertation.
What you have to offer
- MSc or diploma in applied mathematics, operations research, computer science, statistics or similar, with a strong mathematical background that qualifies you for enrollment in a doctoral program at WU.
- Very good background in optimization (combinatorial, conic and convex optimization), very good programming skills, familiarity with stochastics (probability and statistics).
- Very good level of English as well as good pedagogical and presentation skills.
- You are willing to use multimedia teaching and learning formats.
- German language skills are not a prerequisite, but we expect the willingness to familiarize yourself with German over time.
- Some prior background in economics or finance is an advantage.
