2 - Position description

The Faculty of Social Sciences and Solvay Business School, Department Sociology, research group Brussels Institute for Social and Population Studies, is looking for a Postdoctoral Researcher within the ERC-funded project EXPULSE - Urban Expulsion Regimes. 

 

The ERC project EXPULSE investigates how urban expulsion regimes shape housing trajectories among low-income residents, urban citizenship, and socio-spatial inequalities in four European cities: Brussels, Amsterdam, Barcelona and Thessaloniki. 

 

Against the backdrop of deepening housing crises and widening urban inequalities, EXPULSE examines how contemporary forms of expulsion - most notably housing evictions - are produced, governed, and spatially distributed. The project conceptualizes urban expulsion regimes as the dynamic interplay between state policies, housing market regulations, public discourses, and the everyday practices of street-level bureaucrats and private actors involved in eviction processes.

 

Using a comparative mixed-methods approach, the project combines:

• Quantitative analysis of eviction court data;
• Qualitative interviews and ethnographic fieldwork with institutional actors and residents at risk of eviction.

You will play a central and leading role in the quantitative and comparative work package of the project. More concretely your work package contains: 

 

1. Lead the quantitative analysis of urban expulsion regimes

• Compile, clean, harmonise and analyse eviction court datasets across the cities under study, i.e. Brussels, Amsterdam, Barcelona, and Thessaloniki;
• Develop comparative indicators of urban eviction rates;
• Conduct advanced statistical and geospatial analyses (e.g., using ArcGIS, SPSS, Stata, Python, R).

 

1. Conduct cross-city comparative research

• Map and analyse the geographical distribution of eviction patterns within and across cities;
• Examine similarities and differences in urban eviction regimes and their socio-spatial impacts.

 

1. Integrate quantitative and qualitative findings into broader comparative and mixed-methods framework

• Collaborate closely with the PI and PhD researchers to integrate quantitative and qualitative findings;
• Contribute to the theoretical development of the concept of urban expulsion regimes.

 

For this function, our Brussels Humanities, Sciences & Engineering Campus (Elsene) will serve as your home base. 

3 - Profile

What do we expect from you?

 

• 
  
  You hold a PhD in sociology, urban studies, geography, anthropology, or a related field (completed before the start date).
  
  

 

• You conduct high-quality, independent, and collaborative quantitative research;
• You publish in leading peer-reviewed academic journals;
• You are a (co-)author of theoretical and comparative publications;
• You present research at national and international conferences;
• You contribute to project meetings, (inter)nationalworkshops and dissemination activities;
• You engage in societal impact and policy engagement;
• You demonstrate a strong publication record;
• You have strong quantitative research skills, including experience working with large or administrative datasets;
• You have experience with statistical software (e.g. R, Stata, SPSS, or Python) and geospatial analysis (e.g. ArcGIS);
• You are able to work both independently and collaboratively in an interdisciplinary and international team;
• You are fluent in English;
• You demonstrate initiative and the ability to engage proactively with institutional and administrative data providers.

 

Assets (not required, but considered an advantage):

• You have experience working with court or administrative data;
• You have experience with cross-national or comparative research;
• Knowledge of one or more local languages of the selected cities (Dutch, French, Spanish/Catalan, or Greek).

4 - Offer

Are you going to be our new colleague?

 

You’ll be offered a contract, for an assignment of 1 FTE, for 12 months (extendable up to 36 months, on condition of the positive evaluation of the research activities), with planned starting date 01/09/2026. 

 

You’ll receive a salary linked to one of the scales set by the government.
