Offer Description

The Department of Ecosystem Management, Climate and Biodiversity , Institute of Soil Research, is currently seeking one or two Postdoctoral Research Associate(s).

Extent of employment: 40 hours per week or 2x20 hours per week
(a different distribution of weekly hours is also possible)
Duration of employment: 1st of September 2026, limited to 31st of August 2032

Allocation in compliance with the Collective Agreement for University Staff to job group: B1 lit. b
Gross monthly salary: (depending on previous eligible experience) at least (for 40h/week): ¤ 5.014,30
(payable 14 times per year)

Responsibilities

  • Research in the field of soil formation and soil development and resulting effects on the functions of soils in the landscape
  • lnvestigation ofthe influences of climate change on soil development
  • lnvestigation of soil-forming processes from the microscale to the landscape scale
  • Field soil studies and geo-pedological analysis of sites (terrain survey, soil profile description, soil sampling), with derivation of a process-based understanding of landscape-soil interactions
  • Laboratory work using novel methodological approaches, such as micromorphology in combination with spectroscopic micromethods, dating methods, isotope methods
  • Publication in internationally competitive journals in the field of soil science
  • Acquisition and management of national and international research projects
  • Teaching at the Institute of Soil Research to the extent of 4 SWS in topics such as field soil science, soil genesis, soil classification, etc. in German and English
  • Supervision or co-supervision of theses within the scope of the legal possibilities
  • Representation of the subject at scientific conferences and events in Austria and abroad
  • Curation and didactic presentation ofthe soil profile collection of the Institute of Soil Research
  • Knowledge transfer in alignment with BOKU University’s social responsibility
  • Assumption of administrative activities within the framework of the university’s self-administration
  • Cooperation and networking with other institutes at BOKU University a nd with actors from practice and public administration


Required skills and qualifications

  • Doctorate degree / PhD in a relevant scientific field (e.g. soil science, earth sciences, physical geography)
  • Language skills: Excellent written and spoken German and English
  • Solid knowledge and experience in field soil science (terrain survey, soil profile description, soil sampling)
  • Experience with field and laboratory methods in the area of soil formation and soil development
  • Ability to perform integrative analysis at the interface between soil and geomorphology and to derive landscape-related conclusions
  • Outstanding publication record as weil as international orientation and recognition
  • Experience in the acquisition and handling of national and international projects
  • Enthusiasm for excellent teaching as weil as university teaching experience in the fields of soil science, geosciences, physical geography, or similar
  • Experience in the (co-)supervision of thesis projects
  • Experience and willingness to cooperate with other disciplines


Desired skills and qualifications

  • Sound professional experience as a postdoc
  • Experience in independent teaching of university courses, ideally also international teaching experience
  • Experience in the development and implementation of field courses
  • Field experience in different climatic regions, ideally also in countries of the Global South
  • Experience with micromorphological methods for the investigation of soil-forming processes
  • Experience in the application of isotope methods for pedogenetic questions and/or for the characterization of material fluxes in the soil system
  • Experience and willingness to engage in community services, e.g. reviewer and editor experience in the field of soil and/or geosciences, organization/co-coordination of scientific events and professional society activities
  • Experience in the preparation and communication of soil science topics for a non-scientific audience
