About the role

As a Research Associate within the Centre of Exercise and Rehabilitation Sciences, you will play an important part in advancing high-quality research that supports the work of the research team led by Prof Sally Singh. Based in the Respiratory Biomedical Research Unit at Glenfield Hospital, you will contribute to a programme of work focused on exercise, rehabilitation and multiple long-term conditions. You will take responsibility for leading the collection, evaluation and interpretation of research data, working both autonomously and collaboratively to achieve project milestones. Your work will contribute to the wider goals of the programme, and you will disseminate research findings to national and international audiences, helping to raise the profile of the School and the University.

You will also play an active role in developing your own research trajectory by extending existing areas of investigation or contributing to broader team-based research initiatives. This includes identifying opportunities for project grants and fellowships, supporting research bids, and engaging in impact-focused activities. You will work closely with colleagues, clinical partners, collaborators and research participants, including NHS patients, ensuring that the research programme maintains strong links with its wider community. As part of your role, you will also provide guidance to students and colleagues, contribute to workshops and events, and uphold the University’s values of inclusivity, inspiration and impact.

About you

You will hold a PhD or equivalent qualification in an appropriate discipline, or possess equivalent professional experience, and bring evidence of contributing to peer-reviewed journal articles or equivalent research outputs. You will have strong analytical and problem-solving skills, together with expertise in qualitative research methods, including designing and conducting interviews and analysing qualitative data. Experience in research relating to exercise rehabilitation and/or multiple long-term conditions will enable you to contribute effectively to the programme. You will be confident in working independently while also demonstrating the ability to collaborate as part of a multidisciplinary research team. Excellent written and verbal communication skills are essential, with the ability to convey complex information clearly and appropriately.

You will bring an understanding of the NHS context and UK health policy environment, together with a willingness to engage positively with stakeholders across clinical, academic and community settings. You will be proactive in your own professional development and supportive of the development of others, reflecting a commitment to continuous improvement and a collegiate approach to research. With a flexible, organised and adaptable working style, you will be able to plan your workload, respond to emerging priorities and contribute thoughtfully to the development of the department’s research strategy. Your approach will help sustain an inclusive and respectful research environment that reflects the University’s mission and values.
