Artist’s impression of the Cygnus X-1 black hole (right) and its companion star (left). The black hole draws off matter from the companion star. This matter forms a disk that rotates around the black hole (shown in red and orange). Eventually, the matter falls into the black hole or is redirected away in the form of powerful jets. (c) ICRAR

(c) ICRAR The mass of the well-known stellar black hole Cygnus X-1 turns out to be not 15, but 21 solar masses. This new finding was found through new observations by a team including astronomers at the University of Amsterdam. The researchers will publish their findings on Friday, February 19.
