Mr Stephen Gageler SC.
Governor-General Her Excellency Quentin Bryce AC CVO has named ANU Alumnus Mr Stephen Gageler SC as Australia's new Justice of the High Court of Australia. Mr Gageler studied Law and Economics at ANU - graduating with First Class Honours in Law in 1982. He is the 49th person to be appointed to the High Court since Federation. Dean of the ANU College of Law Professor Michael Coper said that Mr Gageler's appointment will be met with great acclaim from all parts of the legal profession. "Stephen is not only an outstanding lawyer in a technical sense - he also has an excellent understanding of, and feeling for, the role and function of the High Court," he said. "He is the second person to be appointed to the High Court from the position of Solicitor-General of the Commonwealth - the first being Chief Justice Sir Anthony Mason, former Pro-Chancellor of ANU from 1972-75 and current Distinguished Visiting Fellow to the ANU College of Law. "ANU now joins an elite group of five Australian law schools whose graduates have been appointed to our highest court.
