The Australian Art Orchestra (AAO) and Indigenous performers from Arnhem Land will meet in a one-off performance taking place at The Australian National University this Wednesday evening. Crossing Roper Bar is an exciting music and dance collaboration between AAO, led by renowned Australian Jazz pianist Paul Grabowsky and the Young Wagilak Group from Ngukurr in southeast Arnhem Land, led by Benjamin Wilfred. Head of the ANU School of Music, Professor Adrian Walter said the concert will present a unique and innovative collaboration between contemporary improvised jazz and traditional Indigenous music. 'Crossing Roper Bar was developed by AAO musicians and the Ngukurr song men but most importantly built around traditional Manikay which has become the creative soul of the music,' said Professor Walter. ?This performance will be a celebration of country, of ceremony and of the power of music to build enduring bridges across cultures, time and space. 'This highly anticipated event, presented in Canberra for one night only, will be a wonderful marriage of one of the world's most significant and ancient music traditions with one of the most recent and creatively dynamic.'  Earlier this year the Australian Art Orchestra was the recipient of the 2010 HC Coombs Creative Arts Fellowship. Awarded each year by the Research School of Humanities and the Arts at ANU, the Fellowship aims to encourage creative arts in Australia through a residency at the University.
