A live fire exercise at the Royal Ballet by John Gerrard
Artist John Gerrard has been awarded the Legacy Fellowship, the first-ever artist fellowship to fuse art and sport set up by Oxford University's Ruskin School of Drawing and Fine Art, Oxford University Sport and Modern Art Oxford. Mr Gerrard will be based at Oxford University's Iffley Road sports complex, an officially recognised Pre-Games Training Camp, where he will work alongside student athletes and 2012 hopefuls. He was awarded the fellowship for his proposal to create a realistic simulated world populated by virtual athletes whose movements derive from the actions of real athletes over the year building up to the London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games. Mr Gerrard said: 'Working closely with athletes at this level, in particular those preparing for London 2012, involves a kind of precision and presence I am fascinated to document. I am hugely grateful to the Legacy Fellowship for allowing this ambitious proposal to be realised. His idea will see his characters involved in a series of exercises or performances that address a constantly shifting theme, which draw extensively on artificial intelligence to script their development. 'The proposed work updates notions of collage to combine aspects of sport, spectacle, military exercises and theatre in an innovative new artwork,' Mr Gerrard explained.
