A Brighton and Hove bus named after Prof Julius Carlebach
Brighton & Hove bus named after Sussex professor. The name of a Sussex academic and Holocaust survivor has been immortalised on the front of one of Brighton's buses. The late Professor Julius Carlebach taught sociology and Jewish studies from 1968 to 1989 and served as a Jewish chaplain at Brighton Polytechnic (later the University of Brighton). Every year Brighton and Hove's iconic buses are adorned with the names of deceased individuals who have made a contribution to the local area. Professor Carlebach had close ties to Brighton before his death in 2001. In addition to his academic work, he served as rabbi to all three of Brighton's Orthodox synagogues, served on the boards of two schools and was the resident director of Brighton Hillel House, a residential and cultural institution for Jewish students at both universities. In 1999 the University conferred on him the title of Emeritus Professor of German-Jewish Studies.
