Sports bursary recipients Nicolla Weekes, Roseanne Thomas and Chloe Sutherland with the Vice-Chancellor, Michael Farthing (second left)
Three Sussex students have had their athletic achievements recognised with a University of Sussex sports bursary for the academic year 2012-13. Roseanne Thomas and Chloe Sutherland, both Biomedical Science students, have been presented with the High Performance Athlete Award for their performance in hockey and karate respectively. Mathematics student Nicolla Weekes, who represents England in rounders, has received the Performance Athlete Award. Sports bursaries are offered annually to Sussex athletes who play at an international or national standard in their chosen sport and are supported by former students through the Sussex Fund, managed by the Development and Alumni Relations Office. The support package - provided by the University's sports service (Sussexsport) and the Students' Union - includes free use of the University's sports facilities, fitness testing and programming, physiotherapy/sports massage support, a parking permit, a financial package, regular mentoring sessions, and some academic flexibility. The students received their bursaries from the Vice-Chancellor, Professor Michael Farthing, at an awards evening yesterday (13 November) in Bramber House. Roseanne Thomas is a member of the Welsh Senior Hockey Squad.
