Byrne to head up ARC

Professor Aidan Byrne, Dean of Science and Director of the ANU College of Physical and Mathematical Sciences, has been appointed Chief Executive Officer of the Australian Research Council (ARC). Vice-Chancellor Professor Ian Young congratulated Professor Byrne on his new position and thanked him for his dedicated work during his time at ANU. "Aidan has been part of the fabric of physics, and science more broadly at ANU, for more than two decades. He started his PhD here in 1981, and returned as a Research Fellow in 1989. He was also Head of the Department of Physics from 2003 to 2007," Professor Young said. "He has been a leader who has displayed great passion for teaching as well as research, and he will be greatly missed." Professor Jim Williams of the Research School of Physics and Engineering said Professor Byrne has been a passionate advocate for innovative science education and research at ANU. "Aidan has been a champion for physics teaching and research, as well as an outstanding promoter of the physics discipline and a forthright commentator in his research area of nuclear physics and energy.
