Development Studies at Sussex ranked first in the world. The QS University World Rankings, published on Wednesday (29 April), have placed the University of Sussex number one in the world for development studies. The Head of the School of Global Studies, Professor Andrea Cornwall, said: "Sussex has one of the largest concentrations of expertise in international development and we're delighted to be recognised in this way for our critical, engaged approach to addressing the global issues of our times." The ranking - placing Sussex above Harvard, Manchester, Oxford and the LSE - reflects the academic reputation, quality, impact and range of international development research undertaken and courses offered across the Sussex campus including by the School of Global Studies , Science Policy Research Unit ( SPRU ), Centre for International Education ( CIE ) and Institute of Development Studies ( IDS ). The Director of IDS, Professor Melissa Leach, said: "We are delighted that development studies at Sussex has been ranked first in the world. "Sussex has a long and rich tradition in this area, and of cross-campus collaboration in producing innovative and cutting-edge research and attracting first-class students from across the globe. "We must continue to seek to build on this success, particularly as we move into a post 2015 era in which development studies has a critical role to play in reframing global development as transformational change for everyone, everywhere." First compiled in 2004, the QS World University Rankings currently consider more than 3,000 institutions and rank more than 800 in 36 individual subject areas, including development studies.
