Does background knowledge about topics help struggling readers? Teaching children background knowledge about topics such as history, geography and science is generally considered a good idea. But a study by academics in the School of Education suggests this approach does not necessarily lead to children becoming better readers. Lead researcher, Dr Beng Huat See , explains more. Can you tell us about the project? We carried out an independent evaluation of a programme called The Word and World Reading programme which is aimed at improving the reading comprehension and wider literacy skills of children aged 7­-9 from low income families.
