Anna Wierzbicka.
ANU linguist Professor Anna Wierzbicka's work has been praised by Nobel Prize winner JM Coetzee. Mr Coetzee mentioned Professor Wierzbicka's book about the English language in the Books of the Year section of the Weekend Australian last month. "I was delighted that JM Coetzee included my Experience, Evidence and Sense among his books of the year. I was also delighted to see the way he described it," Professor Wierzbicka said. "One of the major aims of the book - and of my work in general - has been 'to make the familiar look foreign': to de-familiarise English, which native speakers usually take for granted and regard as the human norm. This is what JM Coetzee responded to." Experience, Evidence and Sense was launched at ANU in 2010. Professor Tim Bonyhady's recent book Good Living Street: The fortunes of my Viennese family , has also been named as a top read in the Wall Street Journal's 'Twelve Months of Reading'.
