The competition is Germany's best-known competition for young researchers. The aim is to get young people excited about mathematics, computer science, natural sciences, and technology, and to find and promote talent. Every year there are more than 100 competitions nationwide. Young people up to the age of 21 can register for the competition. Pupils from the 4th grade up to 14 years of age compete in the junior section "Schüler experimentieren". The 15 to 21-year-olds start in the "Jugend forscht" section. There are six regional competitions in Thuringia and one state competition.
