Korean film festival comes to Cambridge
For the first time in its five years of existence, the London Korean Film Festival has come to Cambridge to show a serious of four recent feature films at the Arts Picturehouse. The event started yesterday and continues until November 23rd. The popularity of South Korean cinema has increased markedly in the past decade, gaining attention among cinephiles for its high-quality, innovative films. Their ability to provide compelling stories that differ from typical Hollywood fare has been cited as a major factor behind the so-called Korean Wave - the tremendous popularity of Korean pop culture throughout Asia during the past fifteen years. The four films offer a diverse sample of contemporary in South Korean cinema. The festival opened with Im Sang-soo's remake of the classic Korean 1960s film "The Housemaid". Tomrrow, "Paju" (the latest film from one of South Korea's leading female directors), focuses on two protagonists dealing with the consequences of family tragedy who are brought together in a struggle to prevent the demolition of an apartment complex in their neighbourhood.
