She has served as a senior policy analyst in the White House Office of Science and Technology Policy working in the area of national security and as a spokesperson for the Laboratory's nuclear forensics mission. Recognized worldwide as a leader in actinide chemistry, Burns was named a Fellow for her contributions to the field of actinide science and to the understanding of actinide metal-ligand multiple bonds.
