Expat showcases the varied talents of its writers across generations and nationalities
Academics and students from Oxford University have joined forces to publish Expat, a literary magazine which showcases the varied talents of its writers across generations and nationalities. All contributors are Oxford academics or visiting students at Oxford for their junior year abroad from Columbia, Georgetown and other US universities. The magazine, which was launched on Monday 13 June 2011, is edited by English academic Dr Tessa Roynon and Erik Fredner, a visiting student from Harvard. Expat has been launched to celebrate the 50th anniversary of St Peter's progression from 'hall' to full college status and includes an article by college's Master, Mark Damazer CBE, in which he muses on the subject of American space. 'America remains a marvel, and every time I go I find something new to admire and enjoy,' he writes. 'I can, and do, wax lyrical about American energy, its diversity and its creativity. But all along - behind the car parks and the Constitution - I cannot help thinking that space is the USA's great and potent force.' The college intends to publish an annual creative anthology from now on, in conjunction with 'Peters Writes', a termly creative writing workshop held at St Peter's which is attended by the college's writer in residence, novelist Joanna Kavenna.
