Mansfield College elects new Principal

University 21 Jul 10 Baroness Helena Kennedy, one of Britain's most distinguished lawyers, has been elected as the new Principal of Mansfield College. Baroness Kennedy will take up the post in Autumn 2011 on the retirement of Dr Diana Walford CBE, who has served as Principal since 2002. Baroness Kennedy was educated at Holyrood School, Glasgow, went to the Inns of Court School of Law and was called to the Bar in 1972. She was appointed Queen's Counsel in 1991. She is a member of the House of Lords and chair of Justice - the British arm of the International Commission of Jurists. Recognised as a leading barrister and an expert in human rights law, civil liberties and constitutional issues, Baroness Kennedy is a member of the Doughty Street Chambers in London and has acted in many of the most prominent cases of the last 30 years including the Brighton Bombing, the Michael Bettany espionage trial, the Guildford Four appeal and the bombing of the Israeli Embassy. She has also acted in many murder trials with a domestic setting.
