Marine Academy Plymouth launch plans announced
Having a go on a surf simulator, meeting a real-life baby robot and journeying through outer space are just some of the exciting activities announced for the launch of Marine Academy Plymouth. The community event which will be officially launched by British sailing legend, Sir Robin Knox-Johnston CBE, takes place 11am-3pm on Saturday 4 September. Sir Robin was the first person to sail single-handed and non-stop around the world. This year he was awarded the Cruising Club of America, Blue Water Medal for the advancement of sailing, sail training and youth development. As well as FREE food and drink for everyone, the event will include community football and martial arts; music and dance performances; arts and craft workshops; interactive science demonstrations; an immersive vision theatre that allows you to travel through space and time; a climbing wall..and a few famous faces that you might just recognise! One of the highlights will be a special ‘students only’ prize draw with over £1000 prizes to be won including a lap top, surf board, ipods, family passes to the National Marine Aquarium and music/game/book vouchers. Organisations helping the Marine Academy Plymouth to celebrate its opening include the University of Plymouth, Cornwall College, Plymouth City Council, the National Marine Aquarium, the Marine Network, Mountbatten Water sports Centre and Clipper Ventures. Helen Mathieson, who is the Principal Designate of the new Academy, said, “This is such an exciting time for us and I¹m delighted that we’re able to mark Marine Academy Plymouth's beginning in such an enthusiastic way.
