Marine Academy Principal Designate appointed

The University of Plymouth, Cornwall College and Plymouth City Council, Sponsors of the proposed Marine Academy Plymouth (MAP) have announced the appointment of the Academy’s first Principal. Helen Mathieson will join Marine Academy Plymouth in April. Professor David Reynolds from the University of Plymouth, which is the initiative’s lead sponsor said: “I am thrilled that we have secured the services of a very experienced educational leader to take the proposed Marine Academy Plymouth forward. There was fierce competition for this role and the calibre of candidates from across the UK is testament to this exciting initiative." “Helen, as Headteacher at Treviglas Community College in Newquay, clearly demonstrated to us that she shares our vision for the Academy. She has the expertise and determination to deliver an Academy which will build a reputation for high quality, innovative teaching and learning, and, is at the heart of the Plymouth education and business communities. Mrs Mathieson started her teaching career at Saltash School in 1973 and worked in various secondary schools throughout Cornwall. She became headteacher at Treviglas Community College in 2003.
