Maths competition winners announced

The winners of a competition run by the King's College London Mathematics School and the Exeter Mathematics School have been announced ahead of a prize giving ceremony at the Bank of England on Wednesday 02 December. Pupils across London were asked to submit a short video in which they explore the work of a great mathematician or scientist. Entries were then judged by a team of PhD students from the Faculty of Natural and Mathematical Studies at King's College London. Three pupils from the All Saints Catholic School were awarded first prize for the creative and effective way in which they presented the ideas of mathematician, Rene Descartes. Aleksandra Aloric and David Marzagão, who judged the entries, said that 'Team Cartesians' (Harriet Elsmore, Sophie Imo and Zoë Middleton from All Saints Catholic School and Technology College) had, 'balanced Rene's core ideas and their impact on our daily life with personal stories in the amazing cartoon they made.' They highlighted the quality of the drawings, stating that this approach was particularly engaging and helped to communicate the ideas to a broad audience. The winning team will attend a special prize giving ceremony at the Bank of England where Andy Haldane, the Chief Economist at the Bank, will present them with their awards. The students will also receive a guided tour around the bank.
