Maths professor appointed to commonwealth science council. October 2014 - Professor Nalini Joshi from the University of Sydney's School of Mathematics and Statistics has been appointed to the Federal Government's newly-created Commonwealth Science Council. She is one of five eminent scientists, researchers and educators on the council, announced yesterday to address the need for industry and science to work together to boost Australia's competitiveness. Chaired by the Prime Minister, the council will be the pre-eminent body for advice on science and technology in Australia. Professor Joshi was the first female Professor at the school and a has long been passionate advocate of her chosen discipline. "Mathematics makes a complex world more comprehensible and manageable," she said. "Maths is a universal language that unlocks innovation by abstracting a problem to reveal patterns that answer crucial questions.
