Melbourne mathematician honoured by US National Academy of Sciences

Professor Peter Hall from the University of Melbourne's Department of Mathematics and Statistics, has been elected to the prestigious US-based National Academy of Sciences (NAS). Scientists are elected to the NAS by their peers for their distinguished and continuing achievements in original research. Professor Hall, an Australian Laureate Fellow, was elected as a foreign associate in recognition of his world-leading research in probability and mathematical statistics. He is one of the most prolific and highly cited researchers in this field with more than 500 research papers and four monographs (specialized pieces of work) with applications in the statistical analysis of medical and astronomical data among others. The NAS is a private, non-profit society of distinguished scholars. Established by an Act of Congress, signed by President Abraham Lincoln in 1863, the NAS is charged with providing independent, objective advice to the nation on matters related to science and technology. The NAS announced the election of 84 new members and 21 foreign associates from 14 countries.
