New UBC Vancouver student residences open with gifted names from Musqueam

Today, five new UBC Vancouver student residence buildings were formally opened at a special naming ceremony hosted by xwm? kw'y?m (Musqueam Indian Band). The buildings, initially called UBC Pacific Residence, were collectively gifted the h?nq'min'm name t? ¨xwh'lel'ms t? kwa'kw?'a'l (The Houses of the Ones Belonging to the Saltwater) by Musqueam in the spring of 2021. Since then, each of the five buildings received its own name: t'm's lel'm - Sea Otter House, opened to residents Apr. 2022 sqim'kw lel'm - Octopus House, opened to residents Apr. 2022 slew't lel'm - Herring House, opened to residents Jan. 2022 q?llal'm'c'n lel'm - Orca House, opened to residents Sept. 2021 qwta:y? n lel'm - Sturgeon House, opened to residents Sept.
