Oxford to host Humanitas Visiting Professorships

Arts 11 Nov 10 Oxford's Humanities Division will coordinate a series of one-week Visiting Professorships as part of the Humanitas programme. Humanitas is a series of 20 Visiting Professorships at Oxford and Cambridge intended to bring leading practitioners and scholars to both universities to address major themes in the arts, social sciences and humanities. The programme was created by Lord Weidenfeld and is managed and funded by the Institute for Strategic Dialogue with the support of generous benefactors. Visiting Professors will be appointed for a given academic year and invited to deliver a series of lectures, followed by a related symposium, masterclass or workshop for graduate students. Professor Sally Shuttleworth, Head of the Humanities Division, said: 'We are excited by this initiative which will enable us to bring world leading figures to Oxford in a range of interdisciplinary fields. Visiting Professors in our first year include the acclaimed playwright Athol Fugard, the photographer Thomas Struth, and the Director of MOMA, Glenn Lowry. Students, staff and members of the public will be invited to lectures, masterclasses and a final symposium featuring other leading figures in the relevant field.
