23 Aug 2013 Two University of Manchester experts on performance in conflict zones are hitting the scene at three hip music festivals this summer, alongside a series of international performers who they have brought to the UK. Professor James Thompson and Ruth Daniel, from the University's In Place of War project, hope to attract the festival goers to a series of lectures, panels and workshops. The musicians, from developing world countries blighted by conflict, are members of IPOW's extensive international network developed over nine years. The networks brings together creative artists, theatre practitioners, street art, music, spoken word and others art forms in response to war. Professor Thompson and Ms Daniel, who also directs a grassroots, DIY and independent global music community called Un-Convention, aim to spread the word on how music and the arts can play a role in dealing with conflict. The researchers will kick off by joining the revellers at Shambala in Northamptonshire on 23 August. They'll also be at Bestival in the Isle of Wight on 5 September and Festival No.
