Charlotte le Flufy of RAG hands over a cheque to the Pathway Workshop in Blackbird Leys
Despite this year's difficult economic climate, fundraising by the Oxford University Student Union (OUSU) has raised a total of £119,000 for charity - its highest ever total. RAG or 'Raise and Give' is Oxford University's student-run charitable fundraising organisation, which this year (Trinity Term 2010- end of Hilary Term 2011) has exceeded all previous totals. RAG encompasses all the fundraising done by students within the University. Two Oxfordshire charities, a children's hospice and a charity to help disabled people get back into work, are among RAG's four main charities for last year that have each received a cheque for £14,500. The money was raised from a variety of events, including a sponsored bungee jump which generated £9,000; a black-tie ball which raised £8,500, and a sponsored event where participants were dropped 100 miles from Oxford and instructed to make their own way back without spending money. The test, which stimulated resourceful thinking on how to get back without resources, spurred many to give - raising a magnificent sum of £17,000 for RAG. The four main charities were selected by RAG after a student vote.
