Rare masterpiece goes on public display for first time A free exhibition of a rare masterpiece depicting the Crucifixion by artist Franz von Rohden will run at Durham's World Heritage Site Visitor Centre in February. The exhibition will focus on the painting - the Crucifixion of Our Lord with the Virgin Mary, St John and Mary Magdalene (1854) - which has come from the collections at Ushaw College, on the outskirts of Durham City. The Crucifixion has never left Ushaw College and is being exhibited to the wider public for the first time. The painting is an example from the Nazarene school of painting, founded in Nineteenth Century Rome by a group of dissident German artists.
