Research Images as Art/Art Images as Research: 2017/18 winners announced
A vibrant series of images have been unveiled as winners of the Research Images as Art / Art Images as Research competition for 2017/18, run by the UCL Doctoral School. The prize giving ceremony, which took place on 3 May, saw 'Ardara River Swirl', by David Griffiths (UCL Civil, Environmental & Geomatic Engineering) named as the overall winner. The surreal and captivating image depicts two cows drinking out of a peat contaminated river running over sand flats, and was captured from a drone during the process of completing a 3D reconstruction of adjacent sand dunes. Dr Beth Munro (UCL Institute of Making), who judged the competition, said of the winning images: " We are pleased that we received so many submissions, across a diverse range of subjects and disciplines of research. As judges, we were, in particular, looking for images that were not only artistically accomplished and aesthetically interesting, but also communicated something about the academics' research findings or process that would transform the way a viewer could understand their discipline or research area, or indeed their view of the world." The winning image was awarded a prize of £400. Six runners up were awarded £200 each, and four images were awarded an 'Honourable Mention'.
