Little Match Girl fill cast
A theatre company of 19 arts students from The University of Manchester is to perform an award winning reworking of a classic fairy tale at Tunisia's most famous theatre. Hans Christian Anderson's "Little Match Girl” will be portrayed using a life sized puppet controlled by two people and supported by a cast of nine actors and four musicians. Known collectively as the Schmucks Theatre Company, they left for Africa yesterday where they will perform at the famous El Hamra Theatre in Tunis. Set in pre-revolutionary Russia, the play tells the story of a destitute little girl, who tries to sell matches on a cold winter's eve. When she lights a match to keep warm, she sees a series of visions, including her grandmother. She strikes one match after another to maintain the vision of her grandmother for as long as she can, but is eventually killed by the cold. Director Nathan Shreeve, a drama and English final year student from Norfolk won Best Director in the Manchester In Fringe Theatre awards and final year drama student Stephanie Elliott, from Canterbury, won best lighting.
