Shining a spotlight on Australia’s pub culture

They are a key part of Australia's cultural identity and have been central to many great yarns and tall tales in Australian folklore. Now, a project from the Australian National University (ANU) Archives is offering a rare insight into the history of some of Australia's oldest pubs. At the centre of the project is Tooth and Company, a major beer producer in New South Wales for more than 150 years. At its peak Tooth & Co. Ltd owned more than 700 hotels across New South Wales. ANU Archivist Catherine Ziegler said the project has something from very nearly every town in New South Wales.
