Your research focuses on Asia. Do you have any personal connection to the region? - Well, my mother comes from South Korea. And that's given me a natural interest and sympathy for the region. But the fact I ended up specialising in Asian affairs as a political scientist came about almost by chance. Demand for people with knowledge of Asia had shot up, so it was the ideal time to get funding for research positions in this field.
