A new initiative has been launched at The Australian National University that will bring together expertise in law and development. The ANU Law, Governance and Development Initiative is a collaboration between the ANU College of Law and the ANU College of Asia and the Pacific and builds on the highly successful ANU College of Law program in Law, Governance and Development (LLM and Grad Dip). The Initiative's convenor Daniel Fitzpatrick said that the collaboration will provide an exciting partnership between areas within ANU as well as fostering relationships with organisations nationally and internationally. "The Initiative will focus on the extensive expertise of various development, governance and law academics within the University and will bring together some of the leading scholars and practitioners in the Asia Pacific to work collaboratively in both research and practice," he said. "A wide range of programs and projects directed towards 'strengthening the rule of law' occupy a prominent place in the international development agenda and are widely viewed as integral to the promotion of good governance and protection of human rights. "ANU has world-leading scholars in the field of law and development, with an ad hoc network spanning the Regulatory Institutions Network, the State, Society and Governance in Melanesia program, and the ANU College of Law. "The Law, Governance and Development Initiative will provide a cross-College framework for collaboration, with a particular focus on engagement with public policy actors both in Australia and the World Bank."
