UCL ranked in global top 10 for influential researchers

A total of 70 UCL academics are featured in Clarivate’s annual ’Highly Cited Researchers List’ for 2025, which recognises the most influential researchers in their fields.

UCL ranks eighth in the world and second in the UK for the most researchers in this year’s list, with 59 academics citing UCL as their primary affiliation (11 other UCL academics have another primary affiliation listed).

Each researcher selected has authored multiple papers which rank in the top 1% by citations for their field(s) and publication year in the  Web of Science Core Collection over the past 11 years.

Professor Geraint Rees, UCL Vice-Provost (Research, Innovation and Global Engagement), said:  "I would like to congratulate all’of my colleagues at UCL who have been recognised among the world’s most highly cited researchers for their innovative and impactful work. It is a privilege to work alongside such brilliant academics as they make groundbreaking discoveries and push the boundaries of knowledge in a wide range of fields. This is a testament to the strength of our community of researchers, working together to make UCL a world-leading university."

David Pendlebury, Head of Research Analysis at the Institute for Scientific Information at Clarivate, said: "As the need for high-quality data from rigorously selected sources is becoming ever more important, we have adapted and responded to technological advances and shifts in the publishing landscape.

"Just as we have applied stringent standards and transparent selection criteria to identify trusted journals in the Web of Science, we continue to refine our evaluation and selection policies for our annual Highly Cited Researchers program to address the challenges of an increasingly complex and polluted scholarly record."
