Following the recent meningitis outbreak in Kent, we are reminding our UCL community of the symptoms to watch out for and what to do if you are concerned. Further updates will appear on this page as needed.
The meningitis outbreak in Kent has understandably caused concern among some students and staff. We want to reassure our community that cases of meningitis are rare, and outbreaks of this kind are even rarer. There are currently no reported cases linked to UCL, and the overall risk to our community remains low.
UCL is monitoring the situation and is in regular contact with public health authorities. We are following official guidance and will keep our community updated, should any guidance change.
We know that some people may feel anxious; whether about themselves, their families, or their vaccination status. This page brings together clear, factual information on recognising symptoms, what to do if you are concerned, and how to access support.
Recognising the symptoms of meningitis
Symptoms of meningitis can come on quickly and may sometimes be mistaken for flu, a cold or a hangover. Common symptoms include:
- a high fever
- a severe headache
- vomiting
- neck stiffness
- sensitivity to light
- a rash that does not fade under pressure
If you or someone you know experiences symptoms that could indicate meningitis or sepsis, seek urgent medical advice immediately by contacting NHS 111. In an emergency, call 999.
Getting vaccinated
Most UK students will have received the MenACWY vaccine (usually between ages 13 and 15) as part of the NHS vaccination schedule.
The MenACWY vaccine protects against four types of meningitis and septicaemia and is available free of charge to students going to university for the first time up to their 25th birthday. If you have not had this vaccine or are unsure of your vaccination status, please speak to your GP. This includes international students.
At present, public health authorities have not recommended any additional vaccination measures in response to the current outbreak.
