The Department of Cultural Sciences is a multidisciplinary department encompassing, among other subjects, ethnology, film studies, gender studies, art and visual studies, cultural studies, and musicology. The Department also offers two bachelor’s programmes, one specialising in cultural studies and one in media, aesthetics and cultural entrepreneurship. The Department is now advertising a permanent, full-time position as Senior Lecturer in Musicology. We are seeking a candidate with a strong commitment to research who wishes to lead, develop and actively participate in musicology education at undergraduate and postgraduate levels.

Subject description
Musicology education at the University of Gothenburg encompasses music-historical, analytical, media-theoretical, sociological, ethnological and cultural-theoretical perspectives on music. Teaching is conducted primarily in Swedish. The subject has a broad research profile focusing on studies of music and media, ethnomusicology, sociology of music, popular music studies, music and democracy, film music and soundtrack studies, song lyrics studies, music history and musical aesthetics.
Duties
The duties include teaching within various areas of musicology at undergraduate, postgraduate and doctoral levels. Teaching will also take place within the bachelor’s programme Media, Aesthetics and Cultural Entrepreneurship (MEK). Teaching duties include lectures, seminars, supervision of degree projects and examinations, as well as course coordination, course development, course administration and professional development. Teaching takes place both on campus and online.
The position also includes allocated research time, which the appointee is expected to use for their own research activities, thereby contributing to the development of the subject and the Department. Examples of research activities include publications, applications for external research funding, participation in research networks, and similar activities. The position may also include leadership roles such as subject coordinator and, depending on the appointee’s profile, teaching within other subject areas at the Department.

Eligibility
The eligibility criteria for employing teaching staff are set out in Chapter 4 of the Higher Education Ordinance (link) and in the Appointment Procedure for Teaching Posts at the University of Gothenburg. Found here (only in Swedish), under Personal-Handläggningsordning.
To be eligible for appointment as Senior Lecturer, the applicant must have demonstrated pedagogical competence and have been awarded a doctoral degree.
To be eligible for appointment as Senior Lecturer in Musicology, the applicant must have demonstrated pedagogical competence and hold a doctoral degree in musicology, or possess equivalent academic competence or other expertise of relevance in view of the subject content of the position and the duties to be performed.
Assessment criteria
Assessment criteria for appointment as a teacher are specified in Chapter 4, Sections 3-4 of the Higher Education Ordinance and in the University of Gothenburg’s appointments regulations. In assessing applicants for appointment as Senior Lecturer, the level of competence required for eligibility shall apply.
Equal weight will be given to pedagogical and scholarly competence. Good collaborative skills are highly valued, as is the ability to work independently and take initiative.
In the selection among eligible applicants, particular emphasis will be placed on:
- Documented and well-attested ability to teach and supervise at undergraduate and/or postgraduate level in musicology
- Documented ability to lead and participate in course development work at undergraduate and/or postgraduate level in musicology
- Documented national and international research activity (e.g. conference presentations, publication of peer-reviewed scholarly works, participation in national and international research networks)
- Documented good ability to collaborate in both internal collegial and external contexts
- Documented good ability to communicate and teach in Swedish and English
- Ability to work across disciplinary and interdisciplinary boundaries
Additional merits
- Documented experience of leadership roles and administrative processes (e.g. Director of Studies)
- Documented ability to obtain external research funding and to lead
- Good knowledge of the Swedish education system
- Good ability to communicate musicological
- Ability to teach basic music theory
As part of the selection process, trial lectures, interviews and reference checks may be conducted in addition to expert evaluation.
Priority shall be given to the applicant who, following an overall assessment of competence and development potential, is deemed to have the best prerequisites for carrying out and further developing the duties associated with the position. The role also requires documented good collaborative skills and flexibility, which may be verified through certificates and, for example, reference checks.
Appointment
The position is a permanent, full-time appointment as Senior Lecturer. A probationary period applies to all permanent appointments.
