In short: the VUB all over again. 2 - Position descriptionWe are looking for a PhD candidate in climate science to contribute to the improved attribution and projection of climate-related child health risks in one of the world’s most climate-vulnerable regions. This PhD position is part of the EU-funded CLIMES project.The bclimate group of the Department of Water & Climate is looking for a motivated PhD candidate in climate science to contribute to the improved attribution and projection of climate-related child health risks in one of the world’s most climate-vulnerable regions. This PhD position is part of the EU-funded CLIMES project. Key words: child health, impact attribution, climate change, earth system modelling, environmental epidemiology, doctoral networks. Climate change poses growing risks to child health, particularly in Sub-Saharan Africa, where exposure to extreme heat and climate variability is high, and health systems are often vulnerable. However, region-specific exposure-response relationships for children are scarce, and most existing climate-health assessments do not capture the influence of sub-daily meteorological variability, which is crucial for understanding heat-related impacts. This PhD project aims to quantify the effects of climate variability and change on child health outcomes across Sub-Saharan Africa by combining epidemiological data analysis with advanced Earth system modelling. The research will involve running the Community Earth System Model (CESM) under past and future climates. As part of the CLIMES Doctoral Network , you will be hired along a leading cohort of early-career researchers studying different aspects of impacts of climate extremes in Europe, from public health to societal perspectives and agricultural impacts, and will have access to a rich program of training activities and research exchanges. These are designed to enhance your career prospects in both academia and the private sector, integrating knowledge from climate science, data science, risk assessment, and the social sciences. You will also be affiliated to the Swedish Centre for Impacts of Climate Extremes. You will be based at VUB, and supervised by Prof. Wim Thiery, but as part of your duties, you will be required to complete two in-person international secondments at WASCAL (West African Science Service Centre on Climate Change and Adapted Land Use, Ghana) and ISGLOBAL (Fundación Privada Instituto de Salud Global Barcelona, Spain).
