Your opportunity:

The Human Research Ethics Unit (HREU) oversees ethics in human research and provides administrative support to the University’s Research Ethics Boards (REBs) and to researchers in the development, review, and oversight of research involving human participants. Under direct supervision of the Manager Human Research Ethics, the Research Ethics Board Coordinator is responsible for coordinating initial and ongoing research ethics review of minimal risk and above-minimal risk studies from pre-submission to project completion. This entails conducting pre-reviews and risk assessments of study submissions, assigning studies to REB members, operationalizing quality assurance frameworks, drafting letters on behalf of the REB, leading consultations with researchers, and ensuring studies are compliant with all relevant research ethics guidance documents, laws, and regulations.

Your responsibilities will include:

  • Determining if research submissions require an ethics review
  • Pre-reviewing minimal-risk and above minimal-risk protocols, annual renewals and project completion reports
  • Coordinating initial and ongoing research ethics review of minimal risk and above-minimal risk studies
  • Analyzing complex, high-risk submissions to assess ethics problems and make informed decisions to resolve or escalate issues
  • Interpreting University, sponsor and regulatory agency ethics review policies for low to medium risk ethics review issues
  • Handling complex and confidential ethics review process documentation which may be published
  • Tracking and monitoring research activities
  • Serving as a resource on specific issues to a group of specialists


 

Essential Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s Degree or acceptable combination of equivalent experience.
  • Minimum (3) three years’ experience in a human research ethics
  • Experience reviewing research ethics protocolsfor compliance
  • Experience drafting letters/correspondence on behalf of the REB Chair/REB
  • Experience reviewing researchers’ responses to ensure compliance with relevant regulations and polices
  • Experience using electronic Research Ethics Board systems
  • Knowledge of Tri-Council Policy Statement: Ethical Conduct for Research Involving Humans - TCPS 2 (2022) and other research ethics-related guidance documents, regulations and policies
  • Excellent written and verbalcommunication skills
  • Proven ability to write and speak clearly and concisely
  • Excellent critical thinking skills
  • Strong collaborative approach and interpersonal skills
  • Excellent at building rapport and developing positive relationships with diverse stakeholders including REB Members, faculty researchers, students and research staff
