Subject and project description

The doctoral student will work on the project ’Heating, transport, and participation in life: Towards an integrated understanding of energy poverty and the power structures upholding it for a just transition’. The project aims to investigate how energy poverty is experienced and whether, and if so how, heating and transport poverty overlap. The project will analyse both energy poverty and the underlying power structures that perpetuate energy inequalities. The aim is to contribute to research in the field and to develop policies that can provide support to households.

The doctoral project consists of several parts. 1) Using qualitative methods to develop knowledge about perceived energy poverty (heating and transport) in Sweden and the power structures that perpetuate energy-related inequalities; 2) Through surveys and interviews, identify the most vulnerable groups in Sweden with regard to energy poverty linked to heating and transport, respectively, as well as cases where these forms of vulnerability coincide and reinforce each other. The project also includes an art exhibition to raise public awareness of the importance of a just transition.

The project is being carried out in collaboration with the Stockholm Environment Institute and Energikontor Syd.

Work duties

You will primarily devote yourself to your doctoral programme, which includes participation in research projects as well as third cycle courses, seminars and conferences. The project has an action-oriented and interdisciplinary approach and is being carried out in collaboration between IIIEE at Lund University, the Stockholm Environment Institute and Energikontor Syd. Empirically, the project focuses on energy poverty linked to transport and housing in Sweden.

The fieldwork that will be carried out within the project will involve travel within Sweden. Various methods will be used for data collection and analysis, both qualitative and quantitative. Data collection will also be carried out in collaboration between all three parties in the project. Analysis and reporting of results will also be done jointly in the project. The candidate for this project is expected to work in collaboration with others in all parts of the research process, from data collection to publication.
