The Arts & Science Advancement team secures donations to support the faculty and its academic priorities. Through a range of programs and special initiatives, the team illuminates the value of supporting the faculty for current and prospective donors, volunteers and alumni.

Your opportunity:

Serving as a writer, editor, strategist and project manager on the Arts & Science Advancement team, the Associate Director, Strategic Content develops advancement communications materials in collaboration with senior colleagues to pursue the faculty’s highest priorities and aspirations.

Under the direction of the Director, Strategic Content, the incumbent is responsible for the research, conceptualization, planning, development and delivery of major gift proposals, cases for support, backgrounders, campaign collateral and other strategic communications targeted to alumni and prospective donors.

The Associate Director, Strategic Content consults with academic, development and volunteer stakeholders, conducts original content research, drafts creative briefs and outlines, and coordinates with writing and design colleagues, often balancing competing deadlines.

The role supports large-scale, complex and multi-unit initiatives by leading the development of high-stakes solicitation, cultivation and stewardship materials and executive communications, and develops frameworks, tools, templates and standards used by other advancement colleagues and collaborators across the faculty.

Your responsibilities will include:

  • Researching and writing stewardship reports, cultivation material and fundraising proposals
  • Writing targeted communications to support fundraising objectives; Writing project-specific proposals and briefings related to fundraising campaigns
  • Developing content for marketing and/or promotional materials
  • Probing clients for information to determine target audience, key messages, and appropriate voice
  • Editing content for style and tone
  • Advising on communication strategies to engage and attract major donor prospects
  • Meeting with current and potential donors to discuss communication plans that align with their giving interests
  • Keeping well-informed on global issues in order to appropriately contextualize and communicate the University goals


 

 

Essential Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s Degree (with a preference in humanities, social sciences or communications, a MA or PhD would be considered a strong asset); or an equivalent combination of experience in communications.
  • Six to seven years of project management experience in advancement communications developing integrated multi-channel communications strategies in a university environment.
  • Superior writing ability is an essential requirement. The successful candidate will have demonstrated, through a portfolio of samples, professional-level writing ability with respect to style, organization and structure, rhetoric, appropriateness to subject, and breadth of subject matter.
  • Extensive experience writing and editing in different styles for different audiences, including academic writing, writing about ideas for the general public, and creative content.
  • Experience writing about topics in science and technology preferred.
  • Knowledge of university advancement policies and procedures, strategic advancement communications (including traditional, new and social media), protocol, diplomacy and an excellent understanding of the university’s mission and intersection with the broader community.
  • Experience meeting with current and potential donors, and other high profile partners, to discuss communications plans that align with their giving interests.
  • Knowledge of Microsoft Office suite is required. Design capability and familiarity with design software are definite assets
  • Strong analytical skills and judgement.
  • Excellent interpersonal and relationship building skills.

This role is currently eligible for a hybrid work arrangement, pursuant to University policies and guidelines, including but not limited to the University of Toronto’s Alternative Work Arrangements Guideline .
