About us:

The Myhal Centre Fabrication Facility (MYFab) is a space for the community of the Faculty of Applied Science and Engineering to move ideas from design to prototype. The facility supports undergraduate courses with technical resources accessible to students 7 days a week to aid in their learning through hands-on physical prototyping, as well as projects by others across the Faculty. The facility covers a wide range of techniques from traditional fabrication with soft materials (plastic/fabrics/foams/wood/sheet metal) to advanced digital fabrication tools (3D printing/Laser cutting/CNC routing). Open throughout the year, the facility also supports the Faculty outreach programs, graduate courses and research efforts.

Your opportunity:

The Senior Facility Supervisor provides for the supervision of the administrative functions and resources associated primarily with the day-to-day operation of the MYFab 4th Floor Light Fabrication Facility (LFF) and the adjacent Rapid Prototyping Facility (RPF), along with directly supporting the academic purpose of both the LFF and the RPF, and serves as a staff resource to the students of the Engineering Society’s clubs and teams including, but not limited to, those accommodated in the Myhal Centre Lower Level/Arena. The incumbent is helpful, enthusiastic and knowledgeable about the ’building blocks’ that are available in the Faculty for students to succeed with their design-build projects.

Under the direction of the Myhal Facility Manager, the Myhal Centre Senior Facility Supervisor, supervising appointed staff and assigning work of work-study students is responsible for the seamless planning and resolution of issues regarding the scheduled use of 4th Floor spaces that are either controlled by the Faculty (LFF, RPF, Project Storage Rooms) or are controlled by the University’s Learning Space Management (LSM) Department (Design Meet Rooms), the maintenance of a clean, healthy and safe environment in the LFF/RPF/Design Meet spaces, the provision of oversight for the Lower Level spaces allocated for use by the Engineering Society, and the establishment and maintenance of an on-line catalogue of Faculty maker spaces and related resources available within and outside of the Faculty.

The incumbent is responsible for the on-line content and administering the delivery of the Tier 1 (non-powered tools) and Tier 2 (powered tools) safety programs and establishes an inventory system for LFF and RPF tools & equipment and undertakes the procurement and receipt of consumable supplies/materials for the LFF/RPF and the monitoring of stock levels.

The Senior Facility Supervisor participates in the Faculty’s Maker Spaces Committee and as a member of the Myhal Centre Health and Safety Committee. In the absence of the Myhal Facility Manager, the incumbent is the designated Acting Myhal Facility Manager.

Your responsibilities will include:

  • Overseeing day-to-day operational needs for one or more labs/workshops
  • Planning and implementing workflow for the unit
  • Coordinating the use of lab equipment and resources with internal and external contacts
  • Creating and editing complex design schematics and architectural working drawings
  • Advising on suitability of experimental apparatus and fabrication techniques
  • Performing design processes that require great precision andattention to many details
  • Liaising with management to determine goals and priorities
  • Providing safety training and ensuring adherence to safety procedures and standards
  • Creating and updating complex and technical documentation
  • Directing the activities of a group all performing a similar function


 

Essential Qualifications:

  • Three-year Electromechanical Engineering Technology program and a member in good standing with the Ontario Association of Certified Engineering Technicians and Technologists and/or Professional Engineers Ontario and/or Ontario Association of Architects or an acceptable equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • 6-7 years of recent and related experience in a fabrication environment, with demonstrated expertise in industrial automation, robotics, control systems, machining, hydraulics, pneumatics, safety systems, mechatronics, PLCs, automated welding, machine elements, and computer controlled manufacturing processes.
  • Experience supervising staff, preferably in a unionized environment.
  • Knowledge of MS Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint), Adobe, and AutoCAD.
  • Ability to decipher mechanical and electrical schematic drawings, and use electrical and mechanical diagnostic tools.
  • Familiarity with relevant technologies, equipment, software and applications.
  • Advanced oral and written communication skills.
  • Knowledge of the Ontario Occupational Health & Safety Act, relatedRegulations, and WHMIS.
  • Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of variables in situations where only limited standardization exists together with an ability to interpret and develop a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form.
  • Analytical ability with the ability to calculate figures and amounts such as proportions, area, percentages, circumference, volume and apply concepts of algebra and geometry.
  • Excellent planning and organizational skills with the ability to manage multiple timelines and priorities.
  • Demonstrated ability to exercise tact, and patience in the execution of day-to-day activities. Ability to work with diverse populations.
  • Ability to develop and implement an engaging learning experience that supports differentiated instruction and universal design.
