Postdoctoral Researcher/Research Associate - STROMCO, 1 FTE, School of Engineering, 011682
Applications are invited from suitably qualified candidates for a full-time, fixed term position as a Postdoctoral Researcher/Research Associate with the Mechanobiology and Medical Devices Research Group in Biomedical Engineering, School of Engineering, at the University of Galway, Ireland.
This position is funded by Research Ireland and is available immediately to contract end date of April 30th 2029.
Research Project information:
Metastatic bone disease and multiple myeloma are driven by interactions between cancer and bone cells. Bone provides an attractive environment for cancer cells to invade and establish a metastatic tumour, which is enabled by bone cells. During multiple myeloma tumour cells in bone marrow activate bone destruction. Therapies to address bone loss for breast cancer and metastatic bone disease patients are inadequate and secondary osteoporosis comorbidity is common for cancer patients. Despite many studies of cancer-bone cell interactions, there remains a limited scientific understanding regarding bone-related mechanobiological factors in metastasis and multiple myeloma progression. We recently uncovered that bone mechanobiological responses contribute to tumorigenesis and osteolysis, but further research is needed to derive a comprehensive understanding of spatio-temporal regulation of osteocyte mechanobiology to inform treatment of metastatic and multiple myeloma cancer-associated osteolysis. This proposal seeks to address these challenges by significantly advancing the state of the art in ex-vivo and computational models of cancer/bone mechanobiology. We will apply these to provide a comprehensive understanding of osteocyte mechanobiology during cancer-associated osteolysis, to inform treatment of metastatic bone disease and multiple myeloma. The Mechanobiology and Medical Device Research Group use multidisciplinary computational and experimental mechanobiology and biomechanics approaches to understand mechanobiology and how this process contributes to bone development and disease, and for the pre-clinical assessment of surgical and minimally invasive medical devices.
Salary: Postdoctoral Researcher/Research Associate salary scale ¤46,805 - ¤59,654 per annum, (subject to the project’s funding limitations), and pro rata for shorter and/or part-time contracts.
Closing date for receipt of applications is 17:00 (Irish Time) on 3rd April 2026. It will not be possible to consider applications received after the closing date.
