2011 Graduates: Dr Philip Batterham

Even though Philip has finished his PhD, he won't be leaving ANU just yet. As a newly appointed Postdoctoral Research Fellow, his skills are being put to work in the PATH Through Life program, a 20-year study of depression throughout adulthood. As a PhD student, Philip looked at mental health in people over 70 and found a strong relationship between cognitive abilities like fast processing of information and how long people live for. He found that as cognitive ability drops off, so does lifespan. During his studies, three of his five papers were accepted for publication in the top journal Psychology and Aging - no mean feat for a PhD student.
