) 25 Ghent scientists may call themselves ’Highly Cited Researcher’ this year. The title goes to scientists who have a significant and broad impact within their field(s) of research.
Since 2001, Clarivate Web of Science has annually compiled a list of scientists who have the most cited publications within their field. To qualify as a ’Highly Cited Researcher’, scientists must have a high impact on their colleagues. Overall, the honour only falls to 1 in 1,000 scientists.
The list is divided by field, but there is also a cross field category.
Cross field
For 2024, the following Ghent scientists are on the list of most cited scientists across fields: Guy Brusselle (affiliated to the Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences), Kevin Braeckmans and Tom Coenye (Faculty of Pharmaceutical Sciences), Wout Boerjan *, Yvan Saeys *, Roosmarijn Vandenbroucke *, Tom Beeckman *, Rudi Beyaert * and Geert van Loo * (Faculty of Sciences). The latter appears in the list for the first time.
Plant and Animal Science
Alain Goossens *, Dirk Inzé *, Guy Smagghe and Yves Van de Peer * are once again on the list of most cited scientists in Plant & Animal Science this year. The expertise of these scientists covers a wide range ranging from plant biotechnology to biostatistics, often with a strong interdisciplinary angle.
Immunology
Within medicine, the experts in immunology confirm their reputation. Martin Guilliams *, Hamida Hammad *, Bart Lambrecht *, Charlotte Scott * and Philippe Gevaert can call themselves Highly Cited Researchers again this year.
Molecular Biology and Genetics
Peter Vandenabeele * is again Highly Cited Researcher in the Molecular Biology and Genetics domain.
Geosciences
As in previous years, Diego Miralles is on the list for Ghent University within Geosciences.
Pharmacology and Toxicology
Stefaan De Smedt is again Highly Cited Researcher within the field of Pharmacology and Toxicology.
Social Sciences
Sebastien Chastin (primary affiliation: Glasgow Caledonian University, United Kingdom), Ilse De Bourdeaudhuij and Frank Witlox were also highly cited by their colleagues within the social sciences this year.
Psychiatry and Psychology
Like last year, Marc Brysbaert is in the list for the Psychiatry and Psychology domain.
About the Highly Cited Researchers’ List 2024
This year, a total of 6886 researchers from 59 countries and regions have been recognised as frequently cited researchers. This is slightly more than last year. The list this year includes 82 researchers with a primary affiliation at a Belgian university or research centre. 23 of them are primarily affiliated to Ghent University, for 2 researchers Ghent University is the second affiliation.
The US, China and the UK traditionally form the top three countries with the largest number of frequently cited researchers.
