Acclaimed cartoonist visits Birmingham

Acclaimed author and illustrator Posy Simmonds visited the University of Birmingham this week to speak about her work. Posy who is best known for her satirical cartoons in the Guardian will talk about her work in adapting Gustave Flaubert's 19th century novel Madame Bovary as a series of cartoons. The lecture entitled 'Madame Bovary/Gemma Bovery' takes place at 5.15pm in the Strathcona Building (room LT6). As well as a career as a cartoonist (primarily with the Guardian), Posy has also written a number of successful children's books. Her most recent work has been in illustrating for the opening titles of the BBC's production of Elizabeth Gaskell's, Cranford. Professor Jennifer Birkett from the University's Department of French Studies who are organising the event, comments: "We're delighted to welcome Posy to Birmingham. Her work in adapting classic literature for new mediums that reach new audiences is both challenging and exciting.
