The Australian National University's new Gender Institute has been officially opened by the Governor-General of Australia, Her Excellency Ms Quentin Bryce AC. Launched during International Women's Week, the Gender Institute will provide a cross-campus focus for existing research on issues of gender and sexuality, as well as act as a catalyst to develop and deepen those activities. The inaugural convenor of the Gender Institute is Professor Kim Rubenstein, Director of the Centre for International and Public Law at ANU. 'The Gender Institute will work to bring research into gender and sexuality issues from across ANU into sharp focus,' said Professor Rubenstein. 'It will do this by creating a virtual network of researchers working in all areas throughout the university, through which we'll highlight the grants, courses and degree programs available to academics and students interested in these issues. We?ll also be offering a special PhD scholarship for students working in gender studies. 'In addition, the Gender Institute will be working to support the employment and retention of women at all levels, in all disciplines, across the University,' she said.
