ANU honors former Indonesian Foreign Minister Natalegawa
The ANU has honoured former Indonesian Foreign Minister and distinguished ANU alumnus Dr Marty Natalegawa for his outstanding service to society and the Asia-Pacific region. Dr Natalegawa has been awarded an honorary degree at the end of year graduation ceremonies at ANU. ANU Chancellor Professor the Hon Gareth Evans AC QC paid tribute to Dr Natalegawa, who has maintained close ties to ANU throughout his distinguished career. "Marty Natalegawa has been a visionary leader and a central player in the development of both Indonesia and the wider Asia-Pacific region," Professor Evans said. "We are delighted to recognise his achievements as one of the most respected foreign policy and international security thinkers of his generation, both within Indonesia, in South East Asia, and in the broader Asia-Pacific region." Dr Natalegawa, who was Foreign Minister of Indonesia between 2009 and 2014, competed his PhD in International Relations at ANU in 1993. Dr Natalegawa dedicated his honorary degree to his wife Sranya and his three children, and said he was inspired by the latest group of ANU graduates. "I stand before you today with a deep sense of humility for the recognition that the ANU has chosen to confer," he said.
