Nobel Laureate Professor Brian Schmidt delivered the following speech at Science Meets Parliament at the National Press Club on Tuesday 18 September:. Members of Parliament, Senators, Fellow Scientists and Distinguished Guests. It is a pleasure to be able to speak to you today on the occasion of the 13th running of Science Meets Parliament. This is an event where scientists from around the country, young and old, come to Canberra, talk about science and policy and politics, and take the big plunge into the Halls of Parliament House and meet MPs and Senators. Science meets parliament is not about whinging, or prothletising; it's about gaining understanding - scientists understanding how our government and politicians work, and equally politicians understanding how scientists work. You see, Scientists often have this notion that "Scientists are from Venus, Politicians from Uranus", and politicians have the view we scientists are just off the planet. The reality is we are two groups of people who don't know each other as well as we should, and that is what Science Meets Parliament is all about.
